HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT

MATCO WHEEL AND BRAKE ASSEMBLY

Step 1: Determine the torque and kinetic energy requirements of your airplane by using the formulas:

Where:

KE = Kinetic energy per wheel and brake assembly in foot pounds

T = Torque required per wheel and brake in inch pounds for 10 ft/sec^2 deceleration rate  

W = Design landing weight in pounds lbs
V = Aircraft speed in knots knots
Rtire = Tire radius in inches inches
N = Number of wheel with brakes
KE = ft-lb
T = in-lb

EXAMPLE: My airplane weighing 2300 pounds landing at 50 knots (or use rejected takeoff speed) using 11 inch diameter tires would create 127360 foot pounds and require 1961 in-lb torque.

Step 2: Using the MATCO mfg wheel and brake chart under kinetic energy and torque, determine which wheels and brakes fall in the kinetic energy and torque rating required for your airplane. Torque ratings are approximate values at 450 psi and vary with brake conditioning

Step 3: Decide whether you prefer to use either a four, five, or six inch wheel and brake combination based on the type of environment your wheels will be used in.
